Seymour Community Swim Club

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q.  What is this Club About?

A. The Seymour Community Swim Club was formed so individuals in the Seymour Area who have an interest in swimming, will have a way to be able to participate in swimming and explore deeper their interest in the sport.  Hopefully, this swim club will be able to encourage and teach youth with swimming interests, so they will be prepared and able to participate in High School competition.  This is not a club to teach your child how to swim.  We encourage enrollment and participation in the Seymour Aquatic Center swimming lessons for anyone who has not achieved the 4th level of Red Cross swimming certification.

Q.  Who can participate?

A.  Anyone in the Seymour area between the ages of 6 and 18 (must be 6 to join and will be able to participate through the July of the year they turn 18).   They must also be in Level 4, or able to swim 25 yards (one length from end to end) in the pool using any stroke.

Q.  How much time is involved?

A.  The amount of time involved is really up to each individual participant.  Each individual can dedicate as little or as much time as they want or need to reach the level of ability they are trying to attain.

Q.  Will there be competitions?

A.  There are meets with local schools/clubs.   These competitions are on Saturdays.

Q.  Attendance (How many practices should I attend?)

A.  Voluntary.  We encourage members to participate in as many practices as they can.  The more practice time that each participant gets, the stronger and better they will become at swimming.   Only you can determine what fits into your schedules.  Even if you can't make a scheduled practice,   We encourage you t find out when the pool has open swim (you can check by clicking here) and participate in that.   Also, daily activities can help to condition you, such as walking, running and stretching.  Recommended -  We would like anyone who is planning on swimming in our meets and to help us get you prepared for what you need to do to participate in the meet.  Also, any last minute updates can be distributed at that time.

Q.  Sign Up Information

A.  The cost to participate in the club will be $50.00 for the for the first child. $85.00 for 2 children. $125.00 for 3 children. .  The swim club is not associated with the Seymour Community High School.  For this reason, we are required to pay for use of the pool.  Although Coach Sarah Tracy volunteers her time to attend practice and meets with the club member, there are still additional expenses associated with running the program and for the ribbons and trophies given out for swim meets.

Fill out the Sign Up Sheet.   Checks should be made payable to "Seymour Community Swim Club."

Q.  Parent Involvement

A.  Parents are encouraged to participate in any and all meets.  We are always looking for volunteers to help time each race, record results and calculate placement.  We may have the opportunity to raise funds by operating a concession stand during meets.  Both parents and students are encouraged to participate.

Q.  Fundraising

A.  It is our hopes to become a self-supporting organization.  In order to accomplish this, we will need members of the club to participate in fundraising activities.  We will try to make those activities fun.  Some of the ideas we are looking into doing include a brat fry during the city wide rummage sale in spring and fall and operating a game or food stand at the Hamburger Days.  If you have suggestions for ways that we can raise funds, please let us know.  We are always looking for new ideas.
Q. How do we get involved in practice?

Come to the pool during designated club practice times.  The practice times are on the pool schedule.  They are also in the material which was distributed during the meeting.

Currently we require you to sign in so we know who is in attendance.  We hope to be able to have Swim Club ID cards that can be used in the future.

Q. What do we need to practice? <

Bring a swimsuit, goggles, swim cap, towel and a good attitude.

Swim caps and goggles can be purchased from any sporting good store.  Have the swimmer try on the goggles.  When the eye piece is gently pressed onto the eye, it should form a vacuum that holds the goggles to the face.  This will ensure that they will hold the water out of the eyes while swimming.

Swim caps are needed for several reasons:

· they make you more aerodynamic (faster),

they protect your hair from the chemicals in the water,

they protect the pool and filter system from an abundance of hair that could come loose during your time in the water.

Caps only need to be worn while you are in the water.

Q. How long are the swim club seasons?

Summer - June to August.
Winter - November to February.

Q. What if we want to find out what the club is about before we join the club?

You are invited to attend a few practices and decide if you think it is something you would be interested in doing.  You must be a paid member of the club to participate in any swim meets.

Q. Will buses be available for practice or meets?

At this time they will not be.  Because this club is not associated with the Seymour School District, buses would need to be paid for by the club.  It is not in our current budget to be able to provide these.  We do encourage car pooling.  If you are interested in car pooling, please let Sarah Tracy or Paula Weyers know.  We will provide those interested with the phone number and/or names of others in your area who are also interested.

We will car pool to all meets.  There is a waiver that will be required to be completed by a parent or guardian prior to participating in car pooling for meets.
